Shahed on a newsroom: another line crossed as talk of a settlement goes on

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called Russia’s strike on the offices of the television channel “We Are Ukraine” a new page of “Russian degradation”

An attack on a television station is another line crossed in an escalation that leaves little room for a settlement. On a day when Moscow was again discussing the war with Washington, a strike drone hit journalists on air in Kyiv. Talking about peace as if this were a negotiation among equals looks preposterous beside a newsroom that has been blown open in daylight.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called Russia’s strike on the offices of the television channel “We Are Ukraine” a new page of “Russian degradation” and demanded a response from Europe and the world.

“Today Russia struck the media, struck journalists,” he wrote. “A strike drone attacked the building of the We Are Ukraine channel of the Yedyni Novyny telethon. In the middle of the day. Exactly when journalists were on air. The building is partly destroyed.”

Emergency services were on site. State Emergency Service crews put out the fire. Zelenskyy said five people were known to be injured and that the number could rise. Channel managers later spoke of six staff hurt; general producer Yurii Suhak said two were in moderate condition, that people had been taken out and broadcasting from that studio stopped. Presenter Alyona Tsyntyla said the main blast hit the newsroom and offices — the second strike on the site in a short period. Producer Roman Nedzelskyi of sister channel My — Ukraina+ called it a targeted hit by a jet-powered drone on the building that houses both outlets.

“Shaheds against the media – that is a new page of Russian degradation, and there must be a reaction from Europe and the world,” Zelenskyy said. “Not a single strike on Ukraine and Ukrainians – on life – can go unpunished. Russia has to be stopped, and that is possible only through joint effort.”

The hit was part of a wider assault on Kyiv. Across the city the same wave of attacks left civilians dead. Hitting a live newsroom is not an accident of war in a capital under fire; it is an attack on the act of reporting while the reporting is happening. That is the line. Peace language that treats the next phone call as equivalent to this wreckage is not diplomacy. It is theatre next to a burned studio.
