G7 countries intend to release up to 100 million barrels of crude oil and diesel from emergency stocks, under pressure from the Trump administration, in an effort to restrain rising fuel prices.

The plan is set out in a statement by G7 leaders published by the Élysée Palace on 2 October, European Pravda reports.

The release, to be coordinated by the International Energy Agency (IEA), will take place over the next four months.

“We are implementing our commitments through a coordinated release via the IEA of 100 million barrels, which will begin immediately and last four months. It will include a significant release of diesel fuel at the start of the period—during the first 20 days—by G7 members and partners,” the statement says.

G7 leaders reaffirmed their commitment to refrain from restrictions on exports of energy and energy products among the G7 countries, and called on all producers to refrain from imposing bans that could heighten market tensions.

They also pledged to maintain sanctions against Russia, while working with the IEA and partners to prevent further spillover of negative effects onto fuel, gas, and other commodity markets.

The decision followed a U.S. suggestion that it might impose a ban on diesel exports if European countries did not supply more fuel to the market.

On 2 October, G7 leaders held an emergency video conference chaired by France to discuss global fuel supplies.

Afterward, U.S. President Donald Trump said European countries had agreed to release a “huge volume” of their diesel stocks onto the market.
