EditRussian drone strikes residential building in Romania’s Galați, injuring two in major airspace breach
This marks the first confirmed instance of a Russian drone directly striking a populated residential building on Romanian territory
A Russian kamikaze drone crashed into a 10-storey apartment building in the eastern Romanian city of Galați early on Friday, causing an explosion and fire on the 10th floor during a large-scale Russian assault on neighbouring Ukraine.
According to Romania’s Ministry of Defence (MAPN) and emergency services, the drone entered Romanian airspace while Russian forces targeted Ukrainian infrastructure near the border. Romanian F-16 fighter jets from the 86th Air Base in Fetești scrambled at 01:19, supported by an IAR 330 SOCAT helicopter, with pilots authorised to engage. The drone struck the building around 02:00.
Emergency responders from the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (ISU) Galați, backed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) and Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) specialists, evacuated approximately 70 residents. Two people suffered minor injuries and received on-site medical care; no serious casualties or fatalities were reported. The fire was extinguished, and the entire explosive payload detonated on impact. Wreckage analysis points to a Russian Geran-2/Shahed-136 type drone.

This marks the first confirmed instance of a Russian drone directly striking a populated residential building on Romanian territory, escalating previous incidents involving debris or fragments (Romania has recorded dozens of airspace violations and fragment recoveries in 2026).
Official reactions
Romanian authorities condemned the breach as a serious violation of sovereignty. The government is investigating via forensic teams from the National Institute of Forensic Science.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described it as “a blatant violation of EU sovereignty and a serious threat to regional security.”
NATO allies expressed concern, highlighting risks to the eastern flank. The incident is expected to intensify calls for enhanced air defence and drone countermeasures along the Black Sea region.
Social media and OSINT accounts widely shared footage of the burning building and wreckage, drawing parallels to the broader risk of the Ukraine war spilling into NATO territory. Russia has not officially commented, though similar past incidents were dismissed by Moscow as Ukrainian provocations or accidents.
The event comes amid heightened tensions on NATO’s eastern flank, with Romania playing a key role in regional security and hosting allied forces and exercises. Romanian officials have repeatedly summoned the Russian ambassador over previous violations. Analysts warn such incidents raise the danger of miscalculation in an already volatile border area.
Key context on prior incidents
Romania has documented dozens of violations since 2022, including drone crashes, fragment recoveries, and airspace penetrations (often during Russian strikes on nearby Ukrainian targets like the Danube ports). By April 2026 alone, Romania had recorded at least seven airspace violations by Russian drones that year, plus multiple fragment discoveries and fighter scrambles. Earlier notable cases occurred in 2023, 2024, and 2025.
Poland saw even more high-profile events, including a large-scale incursion in September 2025 involving 19+ Russian drones, some of which NATO forces (including Polish and Dutch jets) shot down — the first known direct engagement with Russian assets over NATO territory since the invasion. Other Polish incidents involved cruise missiles and deeper penetrations.
Additional violations have affected other NATO members (e.g., brief incursions or crashes in the Baltics, and earlier debris/missile events). Some of the incidents involved Ukrainian drones gone astray.
