EditRussian cruise missile hits Polish (NATO) territory during massive overnight attack on Ukraine
The fact that the missile penetrated deep into Polish territory before crashing marks a clear escalation in the risk to NATO airspace
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha confirmed on Thursday that a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile entered Polish territory overnight, violating NATO airspace as part of a large-scale Russian assault on Ukraine.
Sybiha stated that the Kh-101 crossed into Poland during Russia’s massive strike, which involved 74 missiles – many of them ballistic – and hundreds of drones. “This is yet another clear demonstration that strengthening Ukraine’s air defence is now urgent and serves as a guarantee for the protection of the entire Euro-Atlantic community,” he wrote on X.
He stressed that every decision on additional air-defence systems for Ukraine must be taken without delay and that existing agreements on interceptors must be implemented as quickly as possible. Sybiha also noted that the incident underscores the shared security interests of Ukraine and Poland against a common threat, urging that other bilateral disagreements be set aside during the war.
What happened in Poland
Polish military authorities reported that an unidentified object entered the country’s airspace around 03:40 local time while Russia was attacking western Ukraine. An F-16 fighter jet was scrambled to intercept it, but the object disappeared from radar shortly afterwards.
A helicopter later located a probable impact site in an undeveloped field near the village of Tarnawa-Kolonia in Lublin Voivodeship, roughly 80–100 km from the Ukrainian border. Local residents reported hearing explosions, and police found a crater approximately 10 metres wide along with scattered debris about two kilometres from the nearest buildings. Air-raid sirens sounded across parts of the Lublin region.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk convened a coordination group and travelled to the area. He later said that “all the indications are that it was a Russian Kh-101” cruise missile, while emphasising that final confirmation of the type and origin was still pending. Tusk noted there were no casualties or damage because the object landed in an uninhabited area, and that Polish forces had been ready to shoot it down had it continued on a threatening trajectory.
Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz described the night as “extraordinarily difficult” for Poland’s air-defence and surveillance systems, with multiple objects monitored near the border.
Escalation highlighted
Unlike previous incidents involving drones that have occasionally strayed or been shot down near the border, this case involves a sophisticated long-range Kh-101 cruise missile – a strategic air-launched weapon routinely used by Russia against Ukrainian infrastructure. The fact that it penetrated deep into Polish territory before crashing marks a clear escalation in the risk to NATO airspace.
The Kh-101 is designed for low-altitude flight and has a range of several thousand kilometres. Ukrainian officials reported that Russia launched dozens of these missiles in the overnight barrage targeting Lviv and other western regions, among other locations across the country. At least several people were killed in the wider Ukrainian attacks.
Sybiha framed the violation as direct evidence that robust Ukrainian air defences protect not only Ukraine but the broader Euro-Atlantic area. Polish leaders have stressed ongoing coordination with NATO allies and indicated that investigations, including possible involvement of Ukrainian specialists, are continuing.
The incident is the latest reminder of how Russian long-range strikes on Ukraine repeatedly create spillover risks for neighbouring NATO members, prompting renewed calls in both Kyiv and Warsaw for accelerated delivery of advanced air- and missile-defence systems.
