EditCzech authorities grapple with mystery group behind Pardubice arson
What appears to have overwhelmed investigators most is the complete absence of any prior footprint for the “Earthquake Faction” which claimed the attack
Less than 48 hours after flames tore through a warehouse at LPP Holding in Pardubice, Czech security services remain visibly rattled by an attack that has exposed gaps in their preparedness for a new breed of political sabotage.
The fire broke out early on 20 March in the industrial zone roughly 100 km east of the capital. Firefighters quickly determined it was arson, with accelerants poured inside multiple buildings. Damage was extensive; production halls were gutted. No one was hurt. What followed, however, has left senior officials scrambling.
Within hours, a previously unknown outfit calling itself the “Earthquake Faction” emailed several Czech newsrooms claiming full responsibility. The group attached a professionally shot video showing masked intruders inside the facility dousing equipment with flammable liquid before igniting it. Their statement described the site as the “epicenter” of Israeli arms production in Europe, explicitly linking the attack to Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.

The speed and sophistication of the claim have clearly unsettled authorities. Interior Minister Lubomír Metnar convened a crisis staff almost immediately, telling reporters the incident was “probably connected to a terrorist attack.” Prime Minister Andrej Babiš interrupted his schedule, with reports indicating his plane was turned around so he could chair an emergency meeting of the Security Council. Police chief officials confirmed the case is being investigated under anti-terrorism statutes and that forensic teams would need “several days” to process the scene.
What appears to have overwhelmed investigators most is the complete absence of any prior footprint for the Earthquake Faction. Its website domain was registered only the day before the fire. There are no previous communiqués, no social-media trail, no intelligence chatter. One senior security source told Seznam Zprávy the group’s sudden emergence has prompted internal discussions about a possible “false flag” operation or even state-level involvement – speculation quietly echoed in Prague corridors because the targeted facility had been supplying drone technology linked to Ukraine.
Adding to the confusion is a glaring factual mismatch. LPP Holding has insisted the 2023 partnership with Israel’s Elbit Systems never progressed beyond an announcement; the planned “Centre of Excellence” for drone production was cancelled after a public tender collapsed. Company executives stress that no Israeli weapons have ever been manufactured on site. The facility’s actual work, they say, focused on systems that supported Ukrainian forces.
This discrepancy has forced authorities into an awkward position: they must now verify not only who carried out the attack but whether the attackers even targeted the right building. “We are examining all available information,” Metnar repeated, a phrase that in context sounds more like an admission of uncertainty than a statement of confidence.
As forensic analysis drags on and international partners are looped in, Czech officials face uncomfortable questions about how a brand-new group could execute such a clean operation on domestic soil – and whether more attacks linked to distant conflicts could follow. For a country that has long viewed itself as insulated from Middle East militancy, the Pardubice fire has delivered a sharp and unexpected jolt. The investigation is only beginning, but the sense of being caught off-guard is unmistakable.
